Of first and foremost importance, Stand Up Spike®, SUS® is a TRANSPORT SPORT. The skills acquired during the recreation and racing of SUS® are directly transferable skills that may be used in daily commuting world wide. We Train, We Commute / We Race, We Commute. We, Become The Motor™. SUS® along with Bicycling, Stand Up Paddle, Switch Kick Longboarding, SpikeBoarding™, Foot Biking, Nordic Skiing, Roller Skiing, Inline Skating are all fundamental to a healthy society. TRANSPORT SPORT today. TRANSPORT SPORT tomorrow. TRANSPORT SPORT heals the planet. SUS®, Core Out Your Door™, is the most effect form of land based performance stand up on earth and always will be. It out performs all forms of land based stand up that have predated it. SUS® will continue to outperform everything on land into the future. The carbide spike on the footing of a Susoix® SkateBoard Spike® pat pend is the same as that of all Nordic Roller Ski polls that have existed for the last 25 years.
A carbide spike has been proven by World Cup and Olympic Champions and is used by every national Nordic Ski team on the planet. If you desire to maximize upper body transmission to pavement there is no better way on earth to do it. Both high performance or casual tempo commuting my be practiced. Terrain selection will dictate the workout or commuting speed. Effective stroke is the ultimate goal. Same as in all endurance sports take one hundred elite stand up paddlers and they will all be striving for the same "best", most efficient, stroke, wasting as little energy as possible. Nordic skiers are the same. SUS® stroke is no different. "How slow can you go?", is the order of the day. You can only go fast when you can go slow, with perfect form. Words to live by. Like any finely tuned and strengthened stroke the beginner will have success in execution slowly and their mastery becomes stable within 6 months, proficient in 1 to 3 years, expert in 4 to 6 years and Olympic class in 10 years time. The body adapts to the load, slowly and with dedicated practice. SUP experts will all tell you. Ten thousand hours makes a perfect stand up paddler.
SUS® is a stroke in three parts that engages 75-80% of all SUP musculature. Stand Up Paddlers will recognize the power phase most. The SUS® power phase is all about stacked hands, hip rotation and core engagement same as the SUP power phase. Unlike SUP there is no forward catch nor is there a feather on the return. Maintaining the shaft parallel to the deck during the power phase is critical, same as SUP. It is the dawn of a new era, the era of the Stand Up Athlete. Same as Nordic Skiers world wide that glide in winter and roll in summer. Stand Up Athletes will SUP when day light, water / wind conditions, temperatures and water access allow. At all other times and during commuting SUS® practice will define fully developed SUA/ Stand Up Athletes. For the first time ever stand up hill climbing is quite possible. Distances of 1200' vertical elevations have been covered in 50 minutes, Bear, Mt., NY. Interval and speed work may both now be done during hill repetitions, providing a universal standard of power development and consistent metrics to gage improvement. Elevations remain constant over time. It is the dawn of the era in which King Of Mountain/KOM and Queen of Mountain/QOM competitions begin to occur in high performance Stand Up. A time of SUS®+SUP racing with transition zones much like tri-Sport, bi-Sport racing. Providing for closer audience participation as well as a heightened dynamic in stand up sport for all.
SUS® uses two specialized items of sporting gear. They are, a longboard skateboard specially designed for effective low center of gravity stance a Stand Up SpikeBoard™ longboard and a SkateBoard Spike®. The board is super stable, descending as well as while on one leg. It has safety fenders to keep your feet off the wheels and your spike out of the wheel wells. Fenders also keep the elements under the board and off your legs. These "StandUpSpikeBoards™" are drop deck boards, with 3 inches of drop, with long stand over lengths of 39 " to provide for multiple stances and a comfortable platform for maneuvering at high heart rates. They have 85 mm wheels, 180 mm trucks. We see a time in the not to distant future when reliable hand brakes will be standard on all Stand Up Spike Boards™ for use at any speed, down any hill reliably.
The SkateBoard Spike® is a device very similar to a Nordic Ski pole with one glaring difference. It can be used to spike with one hand alone as well as with two hands simultaneously to Stand Up Spike® or SUS®. The Shaft is oversized in comparison to a ski pole. It is fabricated to weigh as little as possible and made of carbon fiber. It weighs 19 oz. It has a traditional carbide steel spike footing, same as Nordic Roller Ski Poles have had for the last 30 years. The handle is uniquely designed and made to be spiked down upon with the palm, thereby allowing for one hand to grasp the shaft while the other spikes down, one hand over the next (STACKED HANDS) and completes the Stand Up Spike® stroke. The handles core center is solid, ultra-light, resin. The exterior is an optimized foam with the perfect stiffness and flex. The footing is easily replaced using boiling water and a hot glue gun for reapplication. Spike tip life span varies 500-1000 hours. The spike requires a 90 second sharpening with a Diamond® Hand File before each serious work out or every few days of local commuting.
